Aspartame and "psychiatric disorders"
Artificial Sweeteners
by Janet Starr Hull, Ph.D., C.N.
Before you tear open that little paper packet of sweetener and stir it into
your tea or coffee, please read this, even if that’s all you have time to read.
Medical doctors, holistic doctors, nutritionists, journalists, researchers, and
professors—all have worked hard to expose the truth about the dangers of
artificial sweeteners. In this unseen battle, these men and women you do not
know have been fighting to save you and to protect your children from injury and
illness. With more new chemical sweeteners coming on the market today, the
battle is far from being over.
After twenty years of NutraSweet/Equal® (aspartame) dominating the sweetener
market, people are realizing for themselves that aspartame really is a foul food
chemical tragically harmful to their health. But the corporations deny there is
a connection between aspartame and epidemic obesity, mental disturbances, and
disease. They have left the proof to the consumer, who is now getting the
picture, but at great personal cost. Even the corporations have been working
against the thousands of claims of bodily harm and death connected to artificial
sweeteners.
Now people think Johnson & Johnson’s SPLENDA® (sucralose) has “come to the
rescue” as the newest chemical sugar replacement “made from real sugar.” People
don’t want to hear that sucralose may be just as dangerous as aspartame, and
that this “white knight” of sweeteners is no improvement.
“They simply exchanged the harmful methanol in aspartame for chlorine in
sucralose,” states methanol researcher Dr. Woodrow Monte. “People must realize
that these chemicals are toxic and none of them belong in the human diet.”
New chemical sweeteners (like sucralose) and the blending of sweeteners
(aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame K combined in one product) may be causing
users to show signs of weight gain, disruption of sleep patterns, sexual
dysfunction, increases in cancer, MS, lupus, diabetes, and a list of epidemic
degenerative diseases. However, the corporations continue to stand tough in
their denial of any connection to chemical sweetener additives.
Artificial sweeteners are marketed as “being super-sized with more sweetness and
no penalty.” People with eating disorders,
children who are first learning about healthy food habits, diabetics and those with degenerative illnesses are being seduced by crafty
advertising campaigns. “And the added plethora of laboratory chemicals are
entirely unnecessary to put in the public food supply,” says Kelly Goyen, CEO of
Empirical Labs.
What do the corporations say about this? “We’ve done a great job of redefining
sweetness, and it’s great to see it pay off” says Anne Rewey, SPLENDA marketing
director for Ft. Washington, Pennsylvania-based McNeil. “We’re committed to the
leadership position in this market.”
According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, “doctors are
talking about a plague of neurological diseases caused bythese deadly poisons
[aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-Kj.”
As an educated consumer, you have a choice. You can protect yourself from
avoidable illnesses by simply being aware of the sweet deception of the
artificial sweeteners surrounding you.
What are artificial sweeteners and why are they harmful? Artificial sweeteners
are a laboratory mixture of unnatural chemicals that the body can’t process.
Basically, these chemicals either accumulate in your vital organs, pollute your
bloodstream, or create eventual mutations ofyour cells.
Our bodies are like machines (only natural) that operate today just as they did
thousands of years ago. They don’t understand man-made chemicals and cannot
fully process them. Forcing foreign materials into your body is like pouring
shampoo into your car’s gas tank: it wasn’t meant to process it, so the engine
stalls and stops working.
Which Artificial Sweeteners Should You Avoid?
◦◦◦ Sucralose (SPLENDA)
◦◦◦ Aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal)
◦◦◦
Acesulfame-K (Sunett®)
◦◦◦
Neotame®
◦◦◦
Alitame®
◦◦◦
Cyclamate
SPLENDA: The trade name for sucralose, is a relatively new manmade, artificial
sweetener. Johnson &Johnson bought the rights in 1998 to sell sucralose in the
United States as SPLENDA.
Its
basic characteristics are:
◦◦◦
Its taste is nearly identical to sugar
◦◦◦
Its trademark is its inability to break down in processing or in storage
So, why is SPLENDA potentially harmful? SPLENDA contains chlorine, which is a
carcinogen. The SPLENDA marketers guarantee sucralose is chemically bound so it
cannot be released in the body during digestion. I question this, and wonder if
this artificial chemical can safely pass through the human body.
Sucralose (SPLENDA) is a chlorocarbon—a chlorine- containing compound. The
chlorocarbons have long been known for causing organ, genetic, and reproductive
damage. It should be no surprise, then, that testing of sucralose documented in
FDA reports revealed organ, genetic, and reproductive damage. Research on lab
rats showed up to forty percent shrinkage of the thymus gland, a gland that is
the very foundation of our immune system. Due to the chlorine content in SPLENDA,
sucralose can inflame swelling of the liver and kidneys, and initiate
calcification of the kidney, as shown in animal studies. If you experience kidney
pain, cramping, or an irritated bladder after using sucralose, stop using it
immediately.
ASPARTAME:
The dangers of aspartame poisoning have been a well-guarded secret since the 197os. The research and history of aspartame as a cause of illness and
toxic reactions in the human body is conclusive. Aspartame is a dangerous
chemical food additive, and its use during pregnancy and by children is one of
the greatest modern tragedies in human history.
Aspartame is 18o to 200 times sweeter than sugar and contains about four
calories per gram. It’s synthesized from the two amino acids L-aspartic acid and
L-phenylalanine, which are bonded by methanol. Aspartame breaks down easily and
loses its sweetness when heated. Methanol is a very toxic chemical, and one that
is human specific, meaning it reacts negatively particularly in the human body.
One of the most deadly reactions to aspartame is by phenylketonurics (PKU). One
out of 20,000 babies born are unable to metabolize phenylalanine, which makes up
fifty percent of aspartame.
Toxic levels of this substance in the blood can
result in mental retardation.
Beyond PKU, scientists believe aspartame alters
brain function and prompts behavior changes in humans. The FDA has a list of 92
symptoms related to aspartame use, and thousands of people have reported side
effects from aspartame.
Aspartame’s blueprint: The design of aspartame seems simple, but what a
complicated structure aspartame really is.
Two isolated amino acids (aspartic
acid and phenylalanine) are fused together by a third component, methanol.
Methanol bonds the two amino acids, but when released at a mere 86 degrees
Fahrenheit, the methanol becomes a poisonous free radical, breaking down into
formic acid and formaldehyde (embalming fluid). Methanol is proven to be a
dangerous neurotoxin, a known carcinogen that causes retinal damage in the eye,
interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects.
Aspartic acid makes up 40 percent of aspartame. Aspartic acid is a neuroexcitor,
which means it negatively affects the central nervous system. Under excessive
conditions, aspartic acid can cause endocrine (hormone) disorders and vision
problems.
The second isolated amino acid in aspartame’s chemical blueprint is
phenylalanine, which constitutes fifty percent of aspartame.
Too much phenylanaline in the diet causes:
◦◦◦
Seizures
◦◦◦
Elevated blood plasma
◦◦◦
Negative effects during pregnancy that could result in retardation
◦◦◦
Increased PMS symptoms due to the
blockage of serotonin ***
◦◦◦ Insomnia
◦◦◦
Severe mood swings
There is so much information on the dangers of aspartame found in NutraSweet and
Equal that I wrote a book about it. In 1991, I was diagnosed with an incurable
case of Grave’s Disease caused by aspartame. I wrote Sweet Poison: How The
World’s Most Popular Artificial Sweetener Is Killing Us—My Story exposing the
dangers of this artificial sweetener.
Despite the misleading tests from over twenty years ago that claim that
saccharin causes cancer, in my opinion, saccharin remains the safest of all the
artificial sweeteners. Indeed, its cancer “label” has been removed by the FDA.
If you get confused about which colored packet sweetener is which, remember this
simple rule of thumb:
Color Matters
◦◦◦
The yellow packet (SPLENDA)=caution like in a traffic light
◦◦◦
The blue packet
(Equal)=makes you feel blue
◦◦◦
The pink packet (Sweet’N’Low®, or generic
saccharin*) = you’re in the pink!
What Are Safe Natural Sweeteners?
◦◦◦
Stevia
◦◦◦
Raw, unprocessed sugar (Sucanat®)
◦◦◦
Brown Rice Syrup Barley Malt
◦◦◦
Date Sugar
◦◦◦
Honey
◦◦◦
Maple Syrup
◦◦◦
Molasses Sorghum
*Safe for diabetics. Stevia is similar to saccharin—use it sparingly or it’s
bitter. Otherwise, it’s “naturally” delicious and a much healthier choice!
So, the next time you reach for a sweetener packet, think about a healthier
choice.

*** Amy's comment: "Blockage of serotonin" is vague
in this article - it probably means serotonin cannot metabolize and is too
high... artificial sweeteners are known to be similar to SSRIs, blocking
serotonin from leaving the brain / body. See
www.drugawareness.org for more information on high serotonin and the often
deadly serotonin syndrome.
